Municipal Services
Below is a quick links to municipal services offered by the Town of Brookline.
Dog Licenses
Licensing your dog is an important public safety requirement. All owners or keepers of a dog 4 months or older are required by state law to license it annually. The dog licensing period in the Town of Brookline runs from January 1 through December 31. Owners must have of a rabies vaccination which is valid as of the date of issuance. The Clerk’s Office issues dog licenses. You can apply online here.
Green Dog Program
The Green Dog Program is an innovative approach to meeting our dogs' and dog owners' desire to have time off-leash, while sharing the spaces with other park users in our urban community. Brookline has 14 off-leash areas scattered across the town, with specific off-leash hours. The off-leash Green Dog Program is open to all who register and pay the appropriate annual fee to participate. Green Dog Program fees cover the calendar year.
Waldstein Park (Dean Road and Beaconsfield Road) and Daniel W. Warren, Jr. Playground (Chestnut Hill Avenue) are the closest parks to Fisher Hill that participate in the Green Dog Program. Fisher Hill Reservoir Park (Fisher Avenue) is not a Green Dog Program park.
Trash, Recycling and Composting
The Town provides curbside pickup of recycling, trash, bulky items, and yard waste for residents who subscribe to the Town’s waste collection service. All residents can participate in composting through a paid subscription with Black Earth Compost. Subscribe to services here.
Place recycling, trash, and yard waste carts at the curb after 3:30 PM the night before or by 7 AM on collection day. Fisher Hill’s collection day is Thursday.
Empty waste carts should be removed from the curbside before midnight on the day after collection.
Weekday holidays delay pickup by one day, so collection on those weeks will occur on Friday
Collection of bulky and metal items are scheduled online for a fee.
Clothing and other textiles cannot be disposed of in your curbside waste or recycling carts. In 2022, MASS DEP passed a textile waste ban to ensure that these items are reused, either through donation or through textile recovery programs. Learn more here.
Household Hazardous Waste
The Town offers residents several opportunities to dispose of their household hazardous materials the right way. The primary opportunity for hazardous waste disposal is the DPW’s Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Facility which is open every Tuesday from May through October, from 7:30 AM – 12:30 PM at 815 Newton St. Learn more here.
Yard Waste
The Department of Public Works picks up residential yard waste for Town Waste Collection Service subscribers. Yard waste pickup takes place between the first full week of April through the last full week of December, on a resident’s waste collection day (Thursday). Visit the DPW page for tips for preparing your yard waste for collection.
Leaf Blower Use
Town Meeting passed the Leaf Blower Bylaw in order to reduce emissions and noise created from leaf blower use. The bylaw regulates when gas-powered leaf blowers may be used and the maximum decibel level allowed. The goal is to eliminate the use of gas-powered leaf blowers outside of heavy leaf litter collection periods. The regulations are intended to support livable neighborhoods through greater compliance and improved enforcement. Learn more here.
